Welcome back to Caldryn Parliament! The Spring Ball is fast approaching. It marks the beginning of Spring Term. Vanda has big plans for the Warden’s office (to her keepers’ dismay) and some personal issues to address. Giddy is…well, Giddy is keeping secrets, but they’re for the next book, Rogues Lie, so I won’t mention them. I’ll just leave you in suspense because I am evil! There is danger, intrigue, and deep questions of identity ahead. The hexes are flying!

I hope you’re enjoy this slow development of an alternate universe. When the idea for Caldryn Parliament came to me it was partly because I wanted to capture the confident optimism of Golden Age mysteries, but also because I love peek-behind-the-scenes settings and parliaments are fascinating. Plus, the fantasy scene is ready to move beyond magic school and magic college settings to magical workplaces and the exploration of complicated issues.
In Hexes Fly the emphasis remains on the magic aspect of the Realm. The science fiction component will grow. Writing this series is an exercise in self-restraint. I have so many ideas, but they have to be introduced in their own time. Flowers have to be seeded far enough apart that they can all bloom.
A lot is happening in the Realm. We’re only just getting started.
Out now!

Now reading Hexes Fly; good story. Not as well-edited as Schwartz’s prior books.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the story and can only apologize that the editing is distracting you from it. Thanks for reading through it.
I can’t wait to finish the book I’m currently reading to return to your fabulous world!
I originally was a bit apprehensive when I read “Stars Die” because of the magic, but you handled that brilliantly, so it feels more like paranormal science to me (nothing against magic, but I love the science in Science Fiction). The rest hit all my sweet spots – the political intrigue, the found / built family, the mystery, even the medical emergency… I hope to love “Hexes Fly” just as much and look forward to the rest of the series.
I’m glad you enjoyed Stars Die despite the magic. You’ll have to grit your teeth *grin* and tolerate it for Hexes Fly too before Rogues Lie heads into the scifi scene a bit more. One of the biggest challenges with this series is not throwing everything in all at once, so the scifi bit has had to wait its turn. Explaining weird science on top of weird magic, plus all the characters. Patience, grasshopper, I told myself 😉
Just finished Hexes Fly and it did not disappoint! I’m completely invested in these characters. I appreciate the way the story evolves like a mirror of life. Nothing too flashy, just our people working at their craft, evolving and mastering skills, learning and growing, impacted by the lived experience. Then there are the times where major events drop into the everyday and it all changes to rotate around the ripples. But it’s the little wisdoms and epiphanies of the moment that I really love. Those keep me thinking about the story long after I finish reading and it’s the sheer enjoyment of the book that keeps me rereading it. I just gotta say though, Girl! You sure know how to deliver a plot twist ❤️❤️❤️. In conclusion, More Please.. lots more.
Thank you! You’ve given me such a gift. Those are all the things – and more! – that I hoped for this series 🙂 So happy here sitting and rereading your comment!
Point in case – I have a group text with my sister and niece and my daughter and yesterday I sent them this:
“ I read this today…
“a leaf friend, a friendship that flourished in its season and was naturally shed in due course, falling to the ground, composting, and forming part of the substance that would nurture and sustain future friendships” Hexes Fly by Jenny Schwartz
I never heard that term before. But it’s beautiful. What a wonderful outlook 🩷. I looked it up and found in the Tree of life there are leaf people, branch people, and root people. Such a lovely thought. 💕💕💕”
This is one of many of the little jewels I find seeded throughout your stories. They flavor the read, but the Soul. That’s the very definition of how literature enriches our lives even beyond the entertainment value. Words. They matter. If no one told you today, Thank You for giving form and voice to the stories in your head.
PS – I’m rereading Stars and Hexes back to back right now to see how good I am at picking out foreshadowing 😘
Robbie, you just made me tear up. Thank you!
Feed the Soul
I finished reading Shamans and Shifters – so good! So now I’ve started Hexes Fly – which I’m already loving.
Shamans and Shifters was my first scifi series. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Writing it gave me so much joy – realising that anything was possible in created universes.
